01 / CABINET BASES
Check what will support the new top.
A laminate countertop working on the current cabinets does not, by itself, confirm that the cabinets are ready for a stone surface. Have the base units, sink area and any seating extension reviewed for the proposed installation.
Point out loose components, water damage or planned layout changes. Ask which repairs or support adjustments need to happen before the fabricator takes final measurements.
02 / BUILT-IN BACKSPLASH
Plan the wall transition.
Some laminate tops curve upward into a backsplash as part of the countertop. If that section comes out with the old top, the new wall finish needs to be planned too.
Choose whether the replacement will have a separate matching splash, a full-height surface or a coordinated tile finish. Review the area the old splash covered and include any needed wall repairs in the project plan.
03 / SINK & FAUCET
Choose fixtures that fit the cabinet.
Switching from a drop-in sink to an undermount sink changes the countertop opening and sink support requirements. The exact bowl must also work with the cabinet beneath it.
Share model numbers for the sink, faucet and accessories. If you hope to reuse the existing sink, ask for a compatibility review before assuming it can transfer to the new surface.
04 / HEIGHT & CLEARANCES
Review the finished surface level.
The front edge of an older laminate top may not tell you the thickness of the full countertop assembly. Ask the installer to review the proposed finished height with the surrounding kitchen.
Include the range, dishwasher opening, backsplash and exposed cabinet ends in that review. Confirm any related adjustments in the agreed scope.

Describe the laminate, attached splash and any adjoining tile you want to keep. Confirm the removal scope and who is responsible for disposal.
New countertop work
Confirm material, measurements, fabrication, openings, edges, splash pieces, delivery and installation. Include islands and peninsulas as separate pieces in the drawing.
Cabinet and wall preparation
Identify any required cabinet work, support changes or wall repairs. Ask who handles each item and whether it is included in the proposal.
Fixture connections and timing
Coordinate plumbing disconnection and reconnection with the appropriate trade. Ask when the old top will be removed and how that timing relates to measurement and installation.

Can I replace Formica countertops with quartz or granite?
A Formica-brand laminate countertop can be reviewed for replacement with a new quartz or granite surface. The cabinets, support, fixtures and wall transitions need to be checked for the proposed project.
Will I need new cabinets?
Not necessarily. The existing cabinets need to be assessed for their condition and suitability. Any required repairs, support work or layout changes should be resolved before final measurements.
Can I keep the tile backsplash above my laminate top?
Ask for a review before assuming it can stay. The old splash profile, removal method, wall condition and new finished countertop height all affect that plan. Discuss possible repairs in advance.
Can I change to an undermount sink at the same time?
