Consider ready-made when

The complete specification fits.

The finished dimensions, sink position, faucet holes and included pieces work with your cabinet and bathroom layout.

Consider custom when

The top needs to fit your plan.

You need a particular size, sink arrangement, exposed edge or coordinated material, subject to the project review.

Start with the difference

Two ways to buy a bathroom vanity top.

A ready-made vanity top is sold in a defined configuration. A custom top is fabricated around an approved layout. Either can work well when the complete specification suits the room.

Terminology matters: a prefabricated countertop blank can still need additional fabrication. It is different from a pre-made vanity top with a selected sink and faucet arrangement. MSI explains these product categories.

Check before ordering

Cabinet width is only the starting point.

A cabinet’s advertised size does not tell you everything about the countertop it needs. Compare the top’s actual width and depth, planned overhang, adjoining walls and interior sink clearance.

Read the exact product sheet

For example, MSI lists Arabesque Carrara vanity tops in 31 × 22, 37 × 22 and 49 × 22-inch sizes, with an 8-inch faucet spread in its specifications. Those are details for that product, not a sizing rule for every bathroom.

See the manufacturer’s dimensions and specifications. This is a comparison example; ask separately about Sondos material availability.

Check the room and fixtures together

For an alcove, provide photos of both side walls. For a freestanding vanity, identify every visible edge. Include the sink and faucet model numbers, plus cabinet drawings showing drawers and internal divisions.

With two sinks, confirm both bowl locations and usable space around them. A top that fits the cabinet externally still needs a workable fixture layout.

Keeping the existing vanity cabinet?

Ask for a review of its condition, support and compatibility before committing to a new top. Also discuss the old backsplash and any wall repairs the replacement may reveal. Final fabrication needs confirmed measurements.

A custom option for smaller projects

Could a stone remnant work for your vanity?

A remnant is remaining material that may be suitable for a new custom piece. For a small bathroom top, it is worth checking available pieces against the full layout before choosing a color.

Check the complete piece list

The usable material must accommodate the top, sink opening, finished edges and any matching rear or side splash. Include additional bathroom pieces in the same request if matching matters.

Compare the finished quote

A remnant may reduce the material portion, but custom work still needs fabrication and project coordination. Availability changes, and the smallest material cost does not automatically produce the lowest installed total.

Explore countertop remnants for Triad projects. Send your layout so the team can check whether an available piece is a practical match.

Compare like-for-like

What does the vanity top quote actually include?

Compare the complete installed scope for your bathroom. A retail top may include a bowl or backsplash; another product may list those separately. Custom proposals can also differ in what is included.

Ask for removal, disposal and any additional site work to be identified. Confirm who handles plumbing disconnection and reconnection, and arrange that work with the appropriate trade.

A small custom vanity is not reliably priced by multiplying a kitchen starting rate by its square footage. The chosen material, openings, edges, splashes and installation details still affect the quote.

See the Sondos countertop cost guide for wider budgeting context, then request a vanity-specific proposal.

Questions before you choose

Bathroom vanity top FAQs.

Can I replace just the vanity top and keep the cabinet?

Often, provided the existing cabinet is suitable for the proposed surface and fixtures. Have its condition, support and layout reviewed, and discuss the removal and backsplash scope before ordering.

Can a custom top work with a store-bought vanity cabinet?

A cabinet sold without a top can be reviewed for a custom surface. Send the exact model and drawings so the cabinet, sink, faucet and proposed top can be checked together.

Should I buy the sink before requesting a quote?

You can start with the intended model and specifications. Before fabrication, confirm the exact sink and ask whether the fabricator needs the physical bowl or additional documentation.

Is a custom vanity top always more expensive?

There is no universal answer for every material and installation. Compare complete written quotes with equivalent fixtures, splash pieces, removal and installation. Ask whether an available remnant suits your layout.

Can I order a double-sink vanity top in a custom size?

Request a layout review with the cabinet drawings and both sink models. The bowl positions, cabinet compartments, faucet clearances and usable material all need to work together.
