An outdoor countertop is not an indoor countertop moved onto a patio.

Sunlight, rain, temperature changes, grill heat, drainage, appliance clearances, cabinet construction and seasonal exposure all affect the correct material and installation plan.

The exact slab, product, finish, support, seams, overhangs and adhesives must suit the exterior conditions of the project.

Before fabrication, the grill system, sink, refrigerator, cabinet layout and finished countertop dimensions should be confirmed.

CHOOSE THE OUTDOOR SPACE

What are you building outside?

PROJECT 01

Compact grill island with usable prep space.

A focused grill island can include the cooking appliance, storage, doors and a practical landing area without building a full second kitchen.

Confirm
Exact grill manufacturer and model
Plan
Required noncombustible clearances
Protect
Exposed countertop edges and seams
PROJECT 02

Full outdoor kitchen with cooking, water and refrigeration.

A complete exterior kitchen may combine a grill, side burner, sink, refrigerator, storage and serving space across several countertop runs.

Confirm
Every appliance and sink model
Plan
Utilities, ventilation and drainage
Review
Seams, access and slab usage
PROJECT 03

Outdoor serving bar with seating and finished edges.

Patio bars require careful overhang, support and edge planning because multiple sides of the countertop remain visible.

Confirm
Seating count and desired overhang
Plan
Concealed or visible support
Finish
All exposed edges and corners
PROJECT 04

Pool-house countertop for serving and entertaining.

Pool-house surfaces may sit beneath a roof while still facing humidity, wet use, open-air temperature changes and strong reflected sunlight.

Confirm
Covered versus exposed conditions
Plan
Sink, beverage storage and serving zones
Choose
An appropriate exterior-rated surface

THE OUTDOOR WORK TRIANGLE

Separate heat, water, cold storage and serving.

OUTDOOR
KITCHEN
01

Heat

Grill, burner, pizza oven and manufacturer-required clearances.

02

Water

Sink, faucet, drainage, winterization and splash protection.

03

Cold

Exterior-rated refrigerator, ice storage and appliance ventilation.

04

Serve

Prep space, trays, seating, overhangs and traffic flow.

EXTERIOR MATERIAL REVIEW

Not every indoor surface belongs outdoors.

Confirm the exact product—not merely the material category—because exterior approval, finish, color stability and manufacturer guidance can vary.

IMPORTANT

Material approval does not replace appliance specifications, building requirements, structural preparation, proper exterior cabinetry, drainage, utilities or qualified construction work.

NORTH CAROLINA EXPOSURE

Design for more than the perfect Saturday.

UV

Sunlight

Direct and reflected sunlight can affect color, temperature and product suitability.

RN

Rain

Seams, cabinetry, support and surrounding construction must handle repeated moisture.

HT

Heat

Grill systems and hot equipment require exact clearances and noncombustible planning.

CL

Cold

Seasonal temperature changes affect plumbing, appliances and the full exterior assembly.

LF

Leaves and pollen

Exterior counters require more frequent cleaning than protected indoor surfaces.

CV

Covered conditions

A roof reduces exposure but does not automatically make the space equivalent to an interior room.

APPLIANCE COORDINATION

Provide the exact equipment before fabrication begins.

A

Grill cutout

B

Sink opening

C

Cold storage

D

Side burner

A

Built-in grill

Provide the manufacturer, model, cutout sheet, insulation requirements and required clearances.

B

Sink and faucet

Confirm exact models, faucet holes, plumbing access and drainage strategy.

C

Refrigeration

Use exterior-rated equipment and preserve manufacturer-required ventilation.

D

Burners and ovens

Coordinate every heat-producing appliance before countertop dimensions are finalized.

OUTDOOR BAR SEATING

Plan the overhang, support and walkway as one system.

Seating should not be added by extending the stone farther after the cabinets are built. The overhang, brackets, cabinet structure, slab thickness and traffic path should be coordinated early.

  • Confirm the number of seats
  • Preserve comfortable leg space
  • Review concealed support options
  • Keep grill and service traffic separate

OUTDOOR KITCHEN QUESTIONS

Before the exterior countertop is measured.

What is the best countertop for an outdoor kitchen? +

Exterior-suitable granite, Dekton and selected exterior-rated porcelain products are strong starting points. The correct choice depends on the exact product, exposure, appliances, support and maintenance expectations.

Can quartz countertops be installed outdoors? +

Do not assume so. Engineered quartz is generally designed for interiors unless the exact manufacturer explicitly approves the product and application for exterior use.

Does Sondos Stone build the outdoor cabinets? +

Sondos Stone handles the custom countertop fabrication and installation portion of qualifying projects. Cabinetry, utilities, appliances, framing and other construction should be coordinated with the appropriate professionals.

Do you need the grill before measuring? +

The exact manufacturer, model and installation documentation should be confirmed before fabrication. Final measurement requirements depend on the cabinet and appliance installation sequence.

Can an outdoor countertop include bar seating? +

Yes. The overhang, support, slab thickness, cabinet construction, finished edges and walkway should be reviewed before fabrication.

Can you fabricate around a pizza oven? +

Selected projects may include countertop surfaces near approved pizza-oven systems when the exact equipment specifications, clearances and surrounding construction are confirmed.

Do covered patios still need exterior-approved materials? +

A roof reduces direct exposure but the space can still experience temperature changes, humidity, wind-driven rain and sunlight. The exact conditions and product suitability should still be reviewed.

Where does Sondos Stone install outdoor countertops? +

Sondos Stone reviews outdoor kitchen projects across Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem, Jamestown and surrounding North Carolina Triad communities.
