PROJECT PATH Estimate to Installation

THE MOST IMPORTANT TIMING RULE

Do not finalize custom countertop dimensions before the cabinets are installed in their permanent positions.

Cabinet locations, finished walls, appliance openings, sink placement, fillers, panels and overhangs determine the actual countertop shape. A drawing can support an estimate, but production should follow confirmed project conditions.

Sondos Stone coordinates final measurements, in-house fabrication and professional installation once the kitchen has reached the correct stage.

THE REMODELING SEQUENCE

Where countertops belong in the kitchen schedule.

Every remodel differs, but the countertop stage generally depends on completed cabinet installation and confirmed fixture information.

PHASE 01 Planning

Define the room and project scope.

Confirm the cabinet plan, appliance locations, sink type, material direction, backsplash concept, demolition needs and approximate budget.

Countertop estimating begins
PHASE 02 Demolition

Remove the existing kitchen elements.

Existing countertops, cabinetry, backsplash and appliances may need to be removed according to the approved remodeling scope.

Do not template yet
PHASE 03 Cabinet Installation

Set, secure and level the permanent cabinets.

Base cabinets, fillers, finished panels and island components should be installed in their final positions.

Required before final template
PHASE 04 Countertop Template

Confirm the real kitchen dimensions.

Walls, cabinet runs, corners, sink location, cooktop opening, overhangs, seams and exposed edges are reviewed for fabrication.

Sondos Stone production begins
PHASE 05 Fabrication

Produce the custom countertop pieces.

The selected material is laid out, cut, shaped, edged, polished and prepared around the confirmed kitchen design.

Kitchen remains between stages
PHASE 06 Installation

Fit the finished countertops to the cabinets.

Pieces are delivered, positioned, joined at planned seams and reviewed as part of the countertop installation.

Countertop stage completed
PHASE 07 Final Trades

Complete plumbing, backsplash and connections.

Qualified trade professionals may reconnect plumbing, complete electrical work, install tile and finish remaining project items.

Coordinate separate trades

PROJECT RULE

Never assume that plumbing, electrical work, demolition or appliance connections are included simply because countertops are being installed. Confirm the written scope before scheduling.

COUNTERTOP BUDGET CONTROL

The stone color is not the only thing affecting the price.

Installed cost is shaped by material, slab use, layout, cutouts, edges, removal, backsplash, access and installation requirements.

LOWER COMPLEXITY HIGHER COMPLEXITY
Material category

Entry granite, premium quartz, quartzite and specialty materials can occupy very different price ranges.

Slab usage

A layout requiring an additional slab can materially increase the project price even when only a small area is added.

Kitchen shape

Corners, angled cabinets, long islands, waterfalls and multiple rooms can increase fabrication complexity.

Sink and appliance cutouts

Sink, cooktop, faucet, outlet and specialty openings add detailed fabrication work.

Backsplash selection

Full-height slab backsplash requires significantly more material and planning than a standard short backsplash.

Removal and access

Existing materials, stairs, tight entry routes and unusual jobsite conditions may affect labor and handling.

AVOIDABLE REMODEL DELAYS

Five mistakes that can push the countertop schedule backward.

DELAY 01

Templating before the cabinets are final

Moving, leveling or adjusting cabinets after measurements can change the countertop dimensions and fit.

FIX: Finish permanent cabinet installation first.
DELAY 02

Changing the sink after fabrication starts

Different sink models can require different openings, reveals and support conditions.

FIX: Confirm the exact sink before production.
DELAY 03

Waiting to choose the cooktop

Appliance dimensions and installation requirements can affect the countertop opening and surrounding cabinet conditions.

FIX: Provide final appliance information early.
DELAY 04

Assuming every trade is included

Countertop installers may not perform plumbing, electrical, cabinet, tile or appliance-connection work.

FIX: Assign every project responsibility in writing.
DELAY 05

Choosing material without confirming availability

Supplier inventory and natural-stone slab availability can change before the project is ready.

FIX: Reconfirm the exact selection before finalizing.

KITCHEN REMODELING QUESTIONS

Answers before the cabinets and countertops are ordered.

When should countertops be measured during a kitchen remodel? +

Final countertop measurements should generally occur after the permanent base cabinets, finished panels, fillers and island components are installed, secured and level. Project-specific readiness should be confirmed with Sondos Stone.

Can I get an estimate before installing the cabinets? +

Yes. Cabinet plans, rough measurements and project details can be used for a starting estimate. Final fabrication pricing and dimensions require complete project review.

Should I choose cabinets or countertops first? +

Either approach can work, but natural-stone slabs are less controllable than paint, tile and hardware. Many homeowners select a cabinet direction and then compare actual countertop materials before finalizing the remaining finishes.

Can Sondos Stone remove the old countertops? +

Existing countertop removal can be reviewed during estimating. Availability and pricing depend on the current material, backsplash, plumbing, access and project scope.

Who disconnects and reconnects the kitchen plumbing? +

Plumbing should be handled by the appropriate qualified trade professional. Confirm disconnection and reconnection responsibilities before the countertop installation date.

How long will the kitchen be without countertops? +

The schedule between final measurements and installation depends on material availability, fabrication complexity, approvals and the current production schedule. Request a project-specific expectation before demolition begins.

When should the backsplash be installed? +

Tile backsplash is commonly completed after the countertops are installed. A slab backsplash is measured and planned as part of the stone fabrication scope. Confirm the sequence for the exact project.

Where does Sondos Stone handle kitchen remodel projects? +

Sondos Stone serves Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem, Jamestown, Kernersville, Burlington, Asheboro, Lexington, Thomasville, Archdale and surrounding North Carolina Triad communities.
