2cm vs. 3cm Countertops: What Thickness Changes
Three centimeters is physically thicker than two, but “better” depends on the exact material, edge design, support, cabinet height, wall details, availability and local fabrication plan.

Should you choose 2cm or 3cm countertops?
Choose the thickness available in the exact slab/product and approved for the design—not from appearance alone. Three centimeters gives a thicker exposed edge; two centimeters can create a slimmer profile or be built up at the edge.
Nominal dimensions are category labels, and actual product tolerances vary. Neither thickness removes the need to evaluate long spans, overhangs, cutouts, seams, cabinet support or installation access.

Manufacturers list available nominal thicknesses by color and format. For example, MSI’s Calacatta Laza product page lists both 2 cm and 3 cm options. That does not mean every warehouse has both at all times or that two thicknesses from different lots will match.
Record the exact commercial product, not “white quartz” or “gray granite.”
Confirm slab dimensions, nominal thickness and finish.
Natural stone varies; engineered products can also change between lots.
Use current manufacturer and fabricator rules for cutouts, radii, support and installation.

Is 3cm always better than 2cm?
No. It is thicker and heavier, but the right choice depends on product availability, appearance, support, fabrication and the full assembly.
Does 2cm countertop always need plywood?
Do not use a universal rule. Substrate and support depend on the exact material, cabinet condition, spans, cutouts and manufacturer/fabricator requirements.
Can 2cm look thicker?
Yes. A laminated or mitered edge can create a deeper visible face, but it adds fabrication and joint/detail considerations.
Does 3cm need support at an overhang?
It may. Thickness alone does not approve an unsupported cantilever; geometry, material, cabinet and loading still matter.
Can I mix 2cm and 3cm in one kitchen?
Possibly as an intentional design, but finished heights, color/lot match, edge details, seams and transitions must be coordinated.
